Comparing Suicidality Disparities by Sexual Identity and Age

The Trevor Project – February 29, 2020 Newsletter:

In a white paper published this month, we analyzed federal data to compare findings on suicidality among lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) youth ages 18–25 vs LGB high school students. The paper highlights that disparities in suicidality between straight and LGB adolescents persists into young adulthood:

LGB young adults ages 18–25 were more than four times as likely to report planning and attempting suicide in the past year compared to straight peers.

Our Advocacy team is engaged in on-going efforts to expand the collection of gender identity in federal surveys so that government data can also inform the needs of transgender and/or non-binary youth.

Catholic social teaching is a central and essential element of our faith. Its roots are in the Hebrew prophets who announced God's special love for the poor and called God's people to a covenant of love and justice. It is a teaching founded on the life and words of Jesus Christ, who came "to bring glad tidings to the poor . . . liberty to captives . . . recovery of sight to the blind"(Lk 4:18-19), and who identified himself with "the least of these," the hungry and the stranger (cf. Mt 25:45). Catholic social teaching is built on a commitment to the poor. This commitment arises from our experiences of Christ in the eucharist.”
